A Room with a Review: 06/24/20
One last episode of WWE TV before a dozen cases of COVID-19 shuts them down. They are shutting down, right? Guys? Guys!?!
- We start with an incident that happened before the show. Cameron Grimes runs away from a prone Damian Priest, who is laying half in his car and half on the ground. Refs come to help him, and Priest says his back is injured.
- Cameron Grimes comes to the ring and claims that Priest is faking it. He calls for the ref to declare him the winner via forfeit. Priest drags himself to the ring, and we’ve got ourselves a match. Grimes focuses on the back of Priest, but Damian gets some space with a sit-out chokeslam. In the end, Cameron wins clean with the Cave-In.
- Robert Stone approaches Rhea Ripley outside of the Performance Center. He says Aliyah has signed with him, and he offers Ripley a second chance. She takes that as a second chance to throw him in a dumpster. Aliyah runs out and asks Rhea who she thinks she is. Rhea’s a WWE good guy. Couldn’t you tell by the way she hit somebody without provocation? Aliyah slaps her, and Ripley wants a match.
- After a commercial break, we get a quick wrestling lesson from Timothy Thatcher. These are fun segments.
- Next up is NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar w/ Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde vs. Jake Atlas. This was a good match that was won by Escobar with the Phantom Driver. The best part was Mendoza and Wilde not getting involved because Escobar didn’t need them.
- Another segment from earlier today with Roderick Strong paying a visit to his “psychiatrist”. Roddy thinks he’s made a breakthrough, and he gets into the trunk of the car to overcome his fear. Adam Cole (bay bay) says now Strong gets to overcome his fear of Dexter Lumis in a match tonight.
- Finally, they give Malcolm Bivens a microphone. He’s with Indus Sher backstage, talking with McKenzie Mitchell. He says that Danny Burch and Oney Lorcan are lucky they didn’t end up in an ambulance last week.
- Next is a video package for tonight’s North American Championship match.
- Time for some women’s tag team action as Kacy Catanzaro and Kayden Carter face Dakota Kai and Raquel Gonzalez. I like the KC Express, but Catanzaro seems to be still getting her bearings after her time off. Gonzalez flattens Kacy with a huge powerbomb, and then she tags in Kai to get a submission victory.
- After a commercial break, it’s Karrion Kross w/ Scarlett vs. Bronson Reed. Reed goes right after him and takes Kross off his feet. Karrion quickly recovers and hits an exploder suplex. The two start trading blows, and Kross hits a Northern Lights suplex. He gets Reed to tap to the Kross Jacket, which is essentially a rear-naked choke.
- McKenzie is backstage with Adam Cole (bay bay), and she asks who he wants to face next. Cole says he doesn’t care and says it’s a stupid question.
- A quick video package for Mercedes Martinez. Hopefully, she’s getting a big push.
- Here comes Rhea Ripley, who is facing Aliyah w/ Robert Stone. Let’s see if he pukes this week. He tries to distract Rhea with a shoe, but she takes him out. Ripley wins with the Riptide.
- Next up is Dexter Lumis vs. Roddy Strong w/ Bobby Fish. Roddy runs away, and Lumis wins via count-out. Bobby Fish gets too close, and Lumis applies his chokehold.
- Robert Stone demands a rematch with Rhea for Aliyah, but NXT General Manager William Regal thinks it would be more fun if Rhea got to face Aliyah and Stone. Robert agrees, but only if Ripley has to join the Robert Stone Brand if she loses. Rhea accepts.
- It’s Main Event time, and it’s for the NXT North American Championship and a shot at the NXT Championship. It’s Johnny Gargano vs. Finn Balor vs. the champ, Keith Lee. A great match (no surprise) with a good mix of one on one and two on one action. They even recreated the greatest NXT moment of the past year. Keith Lee gets the win after a Big Bang Catastrophe, and he will face Adam Cole (bay bay) in two weeks in a winner take all NXT Championship match. Cole comes to the ring and faces off with Lee in a battle of the photo opportunity.
It was a solid show, but it did feel a little “going through the motions”. What part did you like best? Let me know in the comment section below.
