A Room with a Review: NXT 02/05/20
Charlotte comes back to Full Sail and someone gets a haircut. You can’t get that kind of entertainment over in AEW.
- The show starts with a recap video of last week’s show, plus Rhea Ripley’s appearance on Raw. Mauro Ranallo reminds us that Charlotte will be here tonight.
- The Broserweights head to the ring in a customized golf cart, replete with neon lights and the Dusty Cup. They plan on becoming the NXT Tag Team champions at Takeover: Portland. This prompts an appearance by Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly, who are ready to fight tonight. Roderick Strong talks his boys down and UE heads to the back.
- Fresh off of his appearance on Raw, Angel Garza heads to the ring to face Isiah “Swerve” Scott. Swerve was the one who was pinned at Worlds Collide, costing Garza the NXT Cruiserweight championship. Scott hits a cool springboard hurricanrana early, but Garza takes advantage when things move to the outside. My TV cut out and once I got it working again, Garza was cutting a promo in the ring, so I’m guessing he won. He says that he wants his title back and he knows that Jordan Devlin is in the building, so he’ll be keeping an eye out for him.
- Backstage, Undisputed Era is looking for Tomasso Ciampa. They harass some backstage people and Roddy decides to take the clippers to some rando who is inexplicably getting a haircut. Don’t tempt Vince into bringing back Brutus Beefcake.
- We get a short promo package for Mercedes Martinez. She’s a total badass.
- Sgt. Slaughter is sitting ringside tonight. No word on if GI Bro will be there, too.
- Next up is Dominik Dijakovic vs Killian Dain. Apparently they had a run-in earlier today at the Performance Center, thus prompting our weekly hoss fight. A “shave you’re back” chant breaks out for Dain, making head NXT trainer Matt Bloom very happy. Dain goes to the second rope for a Vader Bomb, but Dijakovic grabs him and hits Feast Your Eyes for the victory. It’s announced that Dominik will get a shot at Keith Lee and the NXT North American title in Portland. Lee comes out to exchange words with Dijakovic and shakes his frienemy’s hand.
- UE is still wandering around backstage when they run into Kushida. After getting bullied a little, Kushida punches Adam Cole (bay bay), but is quickly overtaken by the rest of the crew. Cole fireman carries the Time Splitter into a garbage can. Bronson Reed shows up to help, but also gets jumped.
- Next is a split-screen interview segment between Finn Balor and Johnny Gargano. They yell at each other and I’m super pumped for that match.
- Our next match is Mercedes Martinez vs Kacy Catanzaro. Oh, poor Kacy. She’s going to do some fun athletic stuff, but Mercedes is going to kill her. Kacy turns a pop-up powerbomb attempt into a hurricanrana, but Martinez kicks out. Mercedes quickly recovers and gets the win after a fisherman’s buster.
- More Undisputed Era, as the boys are outside near the production truck. Tomasso Ciampa picks them off one-by-one and he brawls back inside with Cole. As Ciampa prepares to put Cole through the announcer’s table, the rest of the Undisputed Era comes to the NXT Champion’s rescue. They brawl with Ciampa in the ring and the Broserweights come to help out. NXT General Manager William Regal comes out and tells them to get their gear on so they can settle things tonight. They keep brawling after that announcement until “security” finally gets things under control.
- Following the brouhaha is the NXT Cruiserweight Champion, The Irish Ace, Jordan Devlin. He’s facing Prince Pretty himself, Tyler Breeze. Devlin jumps Breeze before he can get in the ring and rolls back in the ring. Breeze gets a full commercial break to recover and eventually gets the advantage, working over the left leg of discount Finn Balor. Devlin hits a standing Spanish Fly, but can only get a two count. Breeze counters a moonsault into a single-leg crab, paying homage to his trainer, Lance Storm. Jordan hits Tyler with a headbutt, followed by the Devlinside Suplex for the win. He may have lost, but I love seeing Tyler Breeze get a 15-minute showcase on TV.
- Before the commercial break, Charlotte Flair is shown arriving at Full Sail. It’s already 9:30. Did she forget where it was?
- Back from commercial and Bianca Belair bounces to the ring. She’s mad at Rhea for forgetting about her and showing up on Raw. She gets interrupted by Charlotte, who says she has a lot of respect for Bianca, but Rhea overlooked her. Ripley heads down to the ring and gets face-to-face with Belair. Charlotte steps in front of Belair, causing Bianca to pull some of the best faces I’ve ever seen. Flair insults both of the NXT stalwarts, so they briefly team up to lay Charlotte out. Props to Bianca for not getting overshadowed there. She’s as much a star as Ripley is.
- Time for our main event, a 6-man tag team match between Undisputed Era (Fish, O’Reilly, and Cole w/ Roddy Strong) vs. Ciampa and the Broserweights (Pete Dunne and Matt Riddle). The good guys jump UE as they head to the ring and the match starts with a brawl. UE finally takes control after Strong slams Dunne into the ring apron while the referee is distracted. Riddle and O’Reilly have a nice hard-hitting exchange. Ciampa gets the hot tag and starts taking out everybody. Strong tries to get involved, so Ciampa hits him with a draping DDT. Ciampa finally gets his hands on Cole, but Roddy runs in and hits him with a knee, prompting a disqualification. UE hits all of their finishing moves and isolates Ciampa in the ring. Cole grabs a can of spraypaint and draws an X on Tomasso’s back. Suddenly, the lights go out and when they come back on, Velveteen Dream is standing on the top rope! Dream cleans house, saving Roddy for last. He rips his pants off to reveal another set of pants underneath, featuring a family portrait of him and Roddy’s wife and son. Oh, Dream. How we’ve missed you.
- How excited are you to have Velveteen Dream back? Let me know in the comment section below.
