A Room with a Review: NXT 08/12/20
Two big returns on NXT this week: Velveteen Dream and fireballs to the face!
- The show starts off with Karrion Kross w/ Scarlett vs. Danny Burch. Danny gets off to a hot start, but Kross quickly gets to throwing him around the ring. Karrion gets the win with his Kross Jacket sleeper hold. Keith Lee comes out after the match, but Kross and Scarlett scamper out of the ring. Lee says he has a contract signed by William Regal for a match at TakeOver 30. Kross signs it and Scarlett slides it to Keith Lee. The Limitless One opens the contract folder, and a fireball hits him in the face!
- Next up is Drake Maverick against Killian Dain. These poor guys end up sharing the screen with Keith Lee getting medical attention backstage, then with Sonic commercials during picture in picture. During the match, Undisputed Era comes down and the guys beat up Drake and Dain. Adam Cole (bay bay) must have confused Maverick for Pat McAfee. Cole grabs a mic and challenges McAfee to come to NXT next week, just days before their match at TakeOver.
- Tyler Breeze faces Santos Escobar, who tells Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde to head to the back. Once Breeze gets the advantage, though, the henchmen come back and distract him, allowing Escobar to get the win with the Phantom Driver. The injured Fandango heads down with a broomstick, but Legado del Fantasma is too much for him. Finally, Isaiah “Swerve” Scott comes down to even out the odds.
- Dakota Kai has words for Io Shirai in a video package setting up their NXT Women’s Championship match.
- Following a commercial break, it’s Indi Hartwell vs. Mia Yim, who just got back from the hospital with her man Keith Lee. Hartwell taps out to a cool submission maneuver from Yim.
- Time for Damian Priest against Bronson Reed, a match that was set up by a parking lot confrontation last week. Reed picks up the win with a jackknife pin after nearly crushing Priest win he slipped off the top rope.
- Io Shirai responds to Dakota Kai with a video package of her own.
- We get some women’s tag team action as Kacy Catanzaro and Kayden Carter face off with Aliyah and Mercedes Martinez w/ Robert Stone. Before the match, Stone makes a play to get Kacy to join the Brand, but she responds by kicking the shin that was run over by Shotzi Blackheart’s tank. The Robert Stone Brand gets the win after Mercedes Martinez hits Catanzaro with the air raid crash. Rhea Ripley comes out after the match to get some licks in on Martinez. Aliyah gets involved, too, so Blackheart runs down to help Ripley.
- Next up is an at-home segment with the Gargano-LeRaes.
- It’s the return of Thatch-as-Thatch-can wrestling school.
- The main event is this week’s edition of the Triple Threat Ladder Match. It’s Kushida vs. Cameron Grimes vs. a mystery opponent. The first two are in the ring and they are facing… Velveteen Dream! Kushida kind of dominated the match, but Grimes gets the win with the Cave-In. After the match, Dream beats up Kushida. Magically, Finn Balor appears in the ring and stares down his opponent for next week.
Things are definitely ramping up ahead of TakeOver. Plus, Kross and/or Scarlett have magic powers, apparently?
