A Room with a Review: SmackDown 06/12/20

This week we get a powerful Black Lives Moment and a MOTY candidate, but also, pee jokes. I watch so you don’t have to!

  • Ooh, we start with a contract signing. Nothing like paperwork to get you pumped for a wrestling show. Sheamus comes to the ring accompanied by a “doctor” and some “security” carrying a curtained rig that they put in the ring. Jeff Hardy comes down and the Celtic Warrior says that he’s not signing the contract until Jeff takes a piss test. The curtain is there so he can pee right in the middle of the ring. Can we please just move past this stupid angle? Hardy manages to fill a jar and while the doctor tests it, Sheamus keeps blabbing. Jeff takes the jar and throws the pee in his face. Sigh.

  • Back from the commercial break, Sheamus is washing his face and gargling mouthwash. The doctor comes in the bathroom (without knocking) and lets him know that Hardy’s test came back negative.

  • Time for tag team action as the New Day comes down, taking a moment to kneel in the ring with fists raised. Thankfully Cole and Graves don’t talk over them. They are facing Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura. Cole mentions that a win for them might earn them a title opportunity, so get ready for “Cesaro and Nakamura have pinned the Tag Team Champions”. It was a relatively short match, with Nakamura getting the pin on Kofi after countering a top rope crossbody attempt. I’m shocked, I tell you, shocked.

  • Tucker is back and he is psyching up Otis for their match later. There’s a commotion and a brawling Sheamus and Jeff Hardy appear. It’s the angle that just won’t stop.

  • It’s time for the match to determine the new Intercontinental Champion. But first, WWE does what they do best by showing a great hype video about the title. It’s AJ Styles vs Daniel Bryan and I honestly won’t be able to do this match justice here. I’m just going to link the highlight video, but if you can, make sure to watch the full match somewhere. The Phenomenal One eventually takes the gold following a Styles Clash and a Phenomenal Forearm. This was a pay per view quality match and they gave it away on free TV.

  • Next is a recap of the Miz and Morrison/Impractical Jokers crossover from last week.

  • It’s a championship celebration for the new Women’s Tag Team Champions, Bayley and Sasha Banks. They are gloating about how awesome they are and how good of friends they are. Before Bayley can read the poem she wrote for Sasha, Bliss Cross Applesauce come to the ring. They are also joined by the IIconics on the TitanTron. While the Aussies distract the champs, Alexa and Nikki jump them and throw them out of the ring.

  • Backstage, Kayla Braxton is interviewing Miz and Morrison, who have a new music video to promote. The video starts but is immediately interrupted by Braun Stowman’s entrance. He’s joined in the ring by Heavy Machinery. Will Otis try to cash in the Money in the Bank contract on Strowman, since he has his tag partner there to help him, too? Find out after the commercial.

  • It’s main event time as the Big Beef Boys (Strowman, Otis, and Tucker) face the Smarm Patrol (Miz, Morrison, and Dolph Ziggler). During the match, King Corbin appears on the TitanTron, talking with Mandy Rose. Otis runs to the back and starts pounding on him. After the bad guys take control because of the numbers advantage, Otis comes back with Mandy in tow. He hits Dolph with the Caterpillar and picks up the victory.

After a good Raw and a great NXT, we come back to earth with a mediocre SmackDown (bookending a match of the year candidate). And recent reports are that Bruce Prichard will be taking over booking duties on Raw, too. Why do they hate us so much? Let me know in the comment section below.
