A Room with a Review: SmackDown 06/26/20
After reports of possibly 30 positive COVID-19 cases at the Performance Center, the WWE decides to hold a tribute to the Undertaker. Let’s toast the Deadman with a deadly virus!
- As part of tonight’s Undertaker tribute, the show starts with a video package featuring the Deadman’s highlights over the years, as well as bits from the Last Ride documentary series. Afterward, the “entire” locker room (or a least those without COVID) stands at the top of the ramp, chanting “Thank you, Taker”.
- Next is a highlight package from his debut at Survivor Series 1990. Be ready for a lot of these.
- The first match of the night is the Boneyard match between Undertaker and AJ Styles at WrestleMania. If Taker is to be believed, this is his final match. I’ll believe it when I see it (or, I guess, don’t see it).
- King Corbin is in the ring and he calls the Undertaker an old bag of bones. He claims Taker’s longevity is due to being protected by the owners. Corbin says Undertaker has been stealing opportunities from young stars like himself. Jeff Hardy comes to the ring and pounds on Corbin, since Undertaker isn’t there to do it.
- After a commercial break, Sarah Schreiber catches up with Hardy backstage. He challenges Corbin to a match, which will be the main event tonight.
- Sasha Banks and Bayley Dos Straps head down to the commentary table for this Fatal 4-Way match to determine Bayley’s opponent at Extreme Rules: Horror Show. Yes, that’s what they are calling it. It’s Alexa Bliss vs. Nikki Cross vs. Dana Brooke vs. Lacey Evans. Nikki against three blondes? I don’t like her odds. Alexa goes for Twisted Bliss, but Brooke gets her knees up. Evans hits Brooke with the Women’s Right, but Cross rolls Lacey up for the win!
- Next up is an 8-man tag team match. It’s New Day and Lucha House Party against Miz/Morrison and Cesaro/Nakamura. Lots of flying and fighting as New Day and Cesaro/Nakamura brawl to the back, leaving Gran Metalik the chance to pin Miz after a rope-walking elbow drop.
- King Corbin is backstage admiring his crown when Sarah asks him about Jeff Hardy. He says that he’s going to teach Jeff a lesson and that he should follow in Undertaker’s footsteps and just retire.
- Time for the Strowman Express to talk about Bray Wyatt. He says the first time he ever felt fear was when he met Wyatt. Braun says Bray is the devil and he enjoyed doing the devil’s work for Wyatt. Strowman wants to rid himself of that part of his nature, so he wants to face Bray at the Wyatt Compound, so he can drown him in the swamp. Oh, God. They’re actually doing Showdown at the Swamp.
- It’s the main event, with King Corbin facing Jeff Hardy. Halfway through the match, the SmackDown babyfaces come down to the ring to show their support for Jeff. Hardy picks up the win with the Swanton Bomb, then some of the babyfaces get in the ring and get their licks in.
This was a completely skippable episode, especially if you’re not a big Undertaker fan.
