A Room with a Review: NXT 06/17/20

It’s storyline advancement day at NXT. Come see where your favorite main eventers end up as the undercard does all the wrestling. Also, Bayley and Sasha Banks are here.

  • Imperium is starting things off with the first of two Tag Team Championship matches tonight. They are facing off with Tyler Breeze and Fandango, who are coming out as Emporium, their imitation of the champs. Aichner and Bartel lay out their challengers as soon as the bell rings. Early on Fandango does a move to the outside and grabs at the elbow that kept him out of action for a few months. Indus Sher comes to the ring but is jumped by Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch. During the distraction, Aichner DDTs Fandango for the victory.

  • It’s a Tom Phillips/Velveteen Dream interview. Dexter Lumis sneaks a drawing of he and Dream with the tag titles on Dream’s divan, but Velveteen says it’s a misunderstanding and he is a solo act.

  • Next up is Damian Priest vs a returning Killian Dain. Priest aggravates a back injury early on and Dain takes advantage. Damian comes back and gets the win with The Reckoning.

  • Following a commercial break, it’s Xia Li against Aliyah. Apparently Robert Stone is a wino now, but Aliyah drags him to the ring to be her manager. During the match, Stone drunkenly stumbles onto the apron and pukes in the ring. Aliyah uses the distraction to roll Li up for the win.

  • Now it’s the Undisputed Era taking Roderick Strong to a therapist to get over his Dexter Lumis issues. The “therapist” is actually Kyle O’Reilly. They decide that he needs to face the trunk that he was stuffed into by Lumis at TakeOver. Roddy tries but ultimately runs away.

  • Mackenzie Mitchell is backstage asking Adam Cole (bay bay) about Scarlett and the hourglass from last week. Keith Lee walks up and says he’s going to be the one to take Cole’s belt and he breaks the hourglass.

  • Adam Cole is in the ring after a commercial. He tells Keith Lee that he might just take Lee’s North American Championship and become Champ Champ, bay bay. Keith moseys out to respond but is interrupted by Johnny Gargano. He says he wants to be Johnny Champ Champ. Lee asks how Candace is doing, after he accidentally squished her last week. Finn Balor comes out and tells Keith Lee that he’s coming for the NA title, then the NXT belt. Cole subtweets a Bullet Club reference at Finn. NXT General Manager William Regal pops up on the screen to book a Triple Threat between Finn, Gargano, and Lee for the North American Championship. The winner will then face Cole in a Champion vs Champion match.

  • Next up is Kayden Carter w/ Kaci Catanzaro vs Dakota Kai w/ Raquel Gonzalez. Kai picks up the victory with a submission.

  • Backstage, which is black and white for some reason, it looks like Scarlett has found the broken hourglass.

  • Leon Ruff gets an entrance this week as he faces Bronson Reed. The large Aussie squashes Ruff (literally), winning with a top rope splash. Reed then calls out Karrion Kross for a match next week. He picks up Ruff and carries him to the back.

  • Out in the parking lot, which is canonically the most dangerous place in WWE, someone has slashed Damien Priest’s tires. Cameron Grimes drives by, laughing.

  • NXT Cruiserweight Champion Santos Escobar comes to the ring with Raul Mendoza and Joaquin Wilde. He talks about removing his mask and leaving a legacy. Drake Maverick comes down and immediately starts fighting all three of them. Escobar literally attempts to murder Maverick by hitting him with a Phantom Driver through a table on the concrete.

  • Time for our main event and second Tag Team Championship match. Shotzi Blackheart and Tegan Nox face Sasha Banks and Bayley Dos Straps, finally defending the belts in NXT over a year after they said they would. Blackheart has Banks in the Cattle Mutilation, but Bayley helps Sasha reverse it into the Bank Statement and Shotzi taps. While they celebrate in the ring, Io Shirai takes them out to defend NXT’s honor.

Not as much wrestling as we usually get on an NXT show, but they seem to betting focused on moving all of the chess pieces into place to keep things moving forward. It was still an enjoyable show.
