A Room with a Review: NXT 07/15/20

Who’s ready for a wrestling show that actually has wrestling? And storylines that end with a smooth transition into the next one? Then NXT is the place to be!

  • We start the show by basking in the glory of the new NXT Champion, Keith Lee. And in case you forgot, he’s also the NXT North American Champion. He pays tribute to his late trainer, “Killer” Tim Brooks, who passed away this month. He then calls out his “frienemy”, Dominik Dijakovic. Lee says he spoke with NXT GM William Regal and suggested that Dom be the first challenger for his titles and he wants to do it tonight! Dijakovic says yes, and it sounds like we have a match.

  • The first match of the evening is Damian Priest vs. Cameron Grimes. I’ll admit that neither of these guys interests me that much, though I do enjoy Grimes as a greasy heel. Priest wins with The Reckoning.

  • Time for some women’s action as Shotzi Blackheart squares off with Indi Hartwell. Just when Blackheart gets the advantage in the match, Robert Stone comes down in a walking boot (tanks to Shotzi) and distracts the ref so Aliyah can knock her off the top rope, allowing Hartwell to pick up her first victory on NXT TV.

  • Tegan Nox is backstage with McKenzie Mitchell and Nox is ready to join some of her favorites, like Kane and Molly Holly, as a champion.

  • Time for our first-hour main event. It’s Dominik Dijakovic vs. Keith Lee for both of his titles. Somehow Mauro gets in an Eagles reference. This match has a great pace, as these two big men tell a superb story of respect and pay tribute to their history together. Lee wins a banger with the Big Bang Catastrophe. The friends hug after the match, but the lights drop and Scarlett appears at the top of the ramp. She walks to the ring and dumps out the remains of her Pier 1 Imports oversized hourglass that Keith Lee destroyed a few weeks ago.

  • After a commercial break, Dijakovic is backstage with McKenzie. He says that Karrion Kross is good, but he’s no Keith Lee. Kross takes offense and the two scrap, with Dominik being left unconscious on the concrete floor.

  • Earlier in the day, Robert Stone tries to make amends with Killian Dain after last week’s misunderstanding, but Dain doesn’t care. Aliyah runs up holding a drawing of Stone being run over by Shotzi’s tank that she says came from Dexter Lumis. Dain says all will be forgiven if Stone can get him a match with Lumis.

  • It’s main event time as The Girl with the Shiniest Wizard, Tegan Nox, faces the Genius of the Sky, Io Shirai, for the NXT Women’s Championship. Shirai spends a good portion of the match working on Tegan’s surgically repaired knee. It was a great match won by Shirai after she counters the Shiniest Wizard with a Shotei palm strike, followed by a moonsault. As Io backs up the ramp, she’s blindsided by a kick from Dakota Kai.

Another great show from WWE’s true #1 show. And once again, the women were the stars of the show. What was your favorite match? Let me know in the comment section below.
